Visitors to Switzerland have always been fascinated by the snowy
landscapes of the high mountains of the Alps, homes to some fine
glaciers. Much of Britain's landscape was sculptured by glaciers too,
but these uniquely extraordinary rivers of ice have disappeared from our
relatively low-lying country. In the era of climatic change in which we
are currently living, they are also beginning to melt in Europe, and
should be seen before it is too late. Almost unbelievably, it is
possible to get to some of the finest remaining glaciers by narrow gauge
mountain railways which John and Angelina, who will be the leaders of
this Tour, researched personally in an extensive five-week journey round
Switzerland in 2008.
